The Business Process Language of TM Forum's Solution Frameworks (NGOSS)

Overview
The eTOM Business Process Framework is known around the world for the common vocabulary it establishes for both business and functional processes. By mapping processes in language that all facets of an organization understand, the Framework helps to identify and prioritize which operational areas are most critical to business objectives.

Because the Business Process Framework reveals inter-relationships, overlaps and gaps in end-to-end processes, Service Providers and their partners can distinguish between horizontal/commoditized processes (i.e., marketing, ordering, billing, support, and cross-selling), and vertical/functional processes (i.e., activities unique to the enterprise and crucial to differentiation.) That understanding helps organizations decide where standards and best practices should be applied, and where specialization is warranted.

Note: The next version of the Business Process Framework will reflect a TM Forum/itSMF partnership to align IT (information technology) and business communities, as well as incorporation of Revenue Management into the overall map.

Business Benefits
Creation of a common language for end-to-end processes that are  shared by intra-Service Provider; inter Service Provider and Business-to-Business pieces of the value chain. Embedding the ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library)  policy approach into the Business Process Framework helps organizations map applications of those  policies into the Business Process Framework.
Well-established, mature best practices and standards become a foundation for setting requirements for system solutions, technical architectures, technology choices and implementation paths. Agnostic, flexible nature allows mapping and modeling across internal and external organizations of all types and disciplines.

Current Deliverables
The Business Process Framework (eTOM) Release 7.5 (GB921), decomposes all enterprise processes.

"Building Bridges: ITIL and eTOM", Release 1.0 (TR143)) details how the TM Forum has worked with the itSMF to draw together the Business Process Map (eTOM) and IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL). The purpose is alignment of Operations Support Systems (OSS) that helps engineers and business people to understand one another and their respective systems.
